Here we present a small group of track layouts for Lionel Fastrack, complete with examples of how they may be treated with scenery. These layouts are small by O gauge standards. They are good for those with small spacers, and for those building a first layout for their children or themselves. These can be made by expanding upon a starter set. Most of the current users of Fastrack were introduced to this track system by a starter set. These sets generally include an oval of track, a low-powered transformer, a small locomotive and three to five cars. The addition of switches (turnouts), track and scenery is an easy thing with a smaller layout. The 4' by 7" area allows an interesting rail operation in a compact space. It is an especially good size for children, since the play area is manageable .
Of course, our choice of scenery is only an example. You are encouraged to pick scenery to fit your own ideas.
This track plan is for a point-to-point rail operation. There three are spurs inside the large loop, The main line is a long track beginning in circle and ending as a spur. The layout is fine for small freight shunting operations. In this case, ours is an industrial / dockside operation. (One could also make a fine mining railway for short locomotives and ore cars.) This railway is like the previous one, except that the spurs inside the main line bisect. This example uses urban scenery and is fitted like a trolley or commuter shuttle system. Trolleys, doodlebugs and rail-buses and other single-unit passenger vehicles would be superb. This layout uses the same basic track plan as the previous one. In this case, we have worked it as an industrial / dockside railway rather than a commuter / trolley line. The small bisecting spurs are just long enough for a single car or short locomotive. In our example, we have terminated the main line in a spur on a pier. A simple plan with a reverse track in the center of the oval, and a bisecting point-to-point track. The reed circle indicates an "S" curve. Optimally, two opposite curves should be separated by at least one straight track to prevent derailments. That would require making the layout a foot wider. We have left it as it is so as to keep within a 4' by 7' space. Trains will have to slow down and proceed carefully through a tight "S" curve. In our example, the urban / suburban, scenery implies a commuter railway with bisecting trolley line. This layout is an enhancement of the previous one. It retains the tight "S" curve. Scenery implies an urban area within the oval. The style of scenery would fit a commuter scenario, with a short point-to-point trolley, shuttle or subway type bisecting the regular railway. This layout uses the previous track plan. It is designed for use with operating accessories. You can see one of the trackside bins at end of the lower left spur, and on the upper spur is a barrel loader. The bisecting track is good for a shuttle-type loading and unloading operation, as well as a commuter shuttle or trolley. The oval track has a sawmill loader and barrel loader. A layout like this is the right size for children to play with train and accessories. This small railway is an enhancement of the previous one, with the long main line converted to an oval. It can easily blend commuter service with industrial /. dockside / mining operations with short locomotives and cars. Our example is different, in that it is filled with operating accessories. A child would have a lot of fun using a starter set type train with operating accessories on this layout. Here is a 5' by 7' layout. We took the first track plan with an "S" curve and added a straight, thus mitigating the tight opposing curves which lead to derailment. If possible, one should add a straight section between the curves of an "S" curve as in this example. |
