This layout is based on two circles in an "oval." That makes it great for a small commuter operation using short trains . Two subway cars, a doodlebug, and RDC or a trolley would come alive on this little pike. It would also do well with a small industrial freight operation. Ours has scenery that links urban to suburban and a shopping mall area.

A spindly layout that is superb for freight shunting or point-to-point commuter railroading. The inner loop is relatively small, while the spurs are large enough for all kinds of point-to-point work. Our railway hosts a heliport / airship terminal ( the farm wind tower can easily be turned into a mooring post for small dirigibles.) You can also use operating dump cars here. On one end, the "Y" spur is a pierfront. Indeed, a Dockside, 44 Tonner, "Beep" or Porter could work wonders on this railway. However, it is also large enough for standard size steam locomotives and diesels.

Those who know our layouts will recognize one of our favorite themes: dockside operations. Here we have a locomotive service spur and car spurs inside the left loop. In the right loop are two of the industries served by the railway. The upper right spur would be a connection with a main line Class 1 railway. To the left are the piers. You could use a grade, and have the left loop climb a hill so that the engine and car facilities are on the hilltop. This railway is superb for small locomotives and shunting work.
