Simple expansion of layouts makes a difference.
Switches add a new dimension by opening up more variety in both design and operation. Here we show simple expansion of a basic layout. This illustrates a method you can use to expand other track plans.
Standard 027 and 0-31 switches have a 45 degree curve, and can replace regular curves while also extending the layout the same length as one straight. Here, two switches per size extend the track pan two straight lengths. This compact layout fits in less than 3' by 4' area |
Adding a straight between the switches makes this configuration. It fits an area less than 3' by 5' and makes a nice display or child's layout, too |
More straights add to the length of the layout. The ends act as passing sidings, for basic two-train operations using a small train or trolleys, |
Extending on one side extends the right loop. The area inside the loop can handle more scenery, etc. |
Extending to both sides as shown increased outer loops. |
We can go the other way, but it takes 4 rather than two straights to evenly expand the height of the layout. |
Here we place switches at angles, yet the outer loops are mirror images of each other. This little layout fits an area less than 4' by5' |
It is a nice display layout, and can be fitted with scenery as shown.
|
We've taken one of the preceding layouts and added scenery to it, as well. All this only requires a 4' by 7' area
