Below are four 12' by 6' layouts using #1 Gauge track. These are for Large Scale, also known colloquially as G Scale. They offer plenty of action, and work especially well for the narrow-gauge and industrial type cars and locomotives. Porters, "critters", and other types like the Aristocraft "Rogers 2-4-2" and the A4 0-4-0 definitely fit the bill. The popular LGB "Starter Set" with narrow gauge loco and car is definitely at home here, as are the Bachmann Porters and Street cars. Each pike is different, depending on how much running you want, and how much scenery and how many accessories you would use.
This 12' by 6' layout features passing sidings, an inner loop and a spur. It works well for operating with a train and small motorized unit, such as a trolley or speeder. You can use it for passenger or freight operations. And yes, it works indoors or out!

By lengthening the top siding, you allow for a full train and a second, short train with small industrial locomotive.

The extended siding on the right adds much more action ,and would allow use of two full trains.
