Battery-operated train toys have been around since the late 1800s. Most run on a small dry cell battery placed in the train itself. A simple on/off switch sets the train in motion around simple two-rail track. There were sets that had a battery box wired to the track. It acted as a transformer does. However, the most common types are like those seen here.
Battery sets have some advantages. They can be run where electricity is not readily accessible. They are safer than traditional electric sets, as they do not involve any current stronger than a 12-volt battery. And they are cheap. As a low-cost gift for a child, the battery set remains popular.
