Build one of several O-42 layouts piece by piece
The 42" diameter curved track and switches cost more than O27 or O-31, but if you have the room and want the wider arcs, you can do it on a budget. You will be working more gradually, perhaps, but the end result will be a fine layout with plenty of action. Here is the first part of what you can do on a budget,, by planning and patience.
We start with a simple oval on a 4' by 8', and have a reverse track with two switches |
Adding a switch allows a siding. |
Two more switches make a circle inside the oval. |
Two switches more allow more sidings - this would make a nice engine yard. You can add them one at a time. |
Variation 1: In this variation, we extend the layout two foot to the right. Add another pair of switches to extend the oval, making a passing siding. |
|
Variation 2: Here we merely extend layout two feet and extend the loop with it. |
Variation 2 A: We can add this siding one switch at a time |
Variation 2 B: We can add more from the top, again one switch at a time. |
If you think this is as far as it goes, think again! We have four more track plans, all of them extensions of Variation 2 B. Just follow this link: |
