As with Lionel and Marx, there are many American Flyer train sets out there. Some of the S gauge sets are being set up by the second and third generation of families using them for holiday displays. The track plans here give a nice S gauge layout for a small space, such as "under the tree." The plans themselves use American Flyer track, but you can easily substitute S-Trax from the S Helper Service, as it uses the same basic track lengths and curve diameter.
S Track is more difficult for a small space due to its 40' curve diameter. A layout normally requires more room, and S layouts tend to be larger in area than comparable ones for O27 and O gauge. The layouts below give you good action in the smaller 4' by 5' and 4' by 4' spaces. The center is empty, leaving room for the tree and tree stand.
Sidings allow you to vary the train's route, and to display space cars on the siding itself while running a train.
