Our classic O27 railway with accessories
2002 was our second year at Ocean Grove. Late year we had a small 4' by 7' pike. This year was better - our O27 display was four feet longer, had more accessories and more trains. We do not have any place to keep a large portable layout, and since our car is a Saturn we need something easy to transport. Our solution - this simple set-up. The ground cover is made of felt-lined vinyl tablecloths, placed felt side up. It is great as "fake snow" and is flat enough that we can stand things on it. Track is laid on site, using classic O27 track. We had three loops and one bumper-to-bumper trolley track. The tunnel is a disposable model made on site from a box covered with fluffy fake snow.
Operating accessories are a must. This year, along with the crossing gates and flashing signals, we added the #145 gateman, a woodland critter carousel, Victorian carousel, animated light house and animated skier hill. The Trees are our own work, embellished with miniature decorations and the with garlands made of old style pull chains.
This year, the Blue train ran again, as did an assortment of original Marx and Lionel. The result was wonderful. Kids and adults alike enjoyed our O27 Tinplate World. The kids loved them, and they were especially entranced by the 145 gateman. Another hot item - the Coyote and Road runner hopper, with Wiley pursuing the bird around and around. The most popular? The Blue Train. They loved it, and their favorite locomotives were the #8303 "Blue Comet" and Marx red Commodore Vanderbilt.
Here it is - 4' by 11'. a simple O27 set-up with a simple tunnel, animated accessories, crossing signals and fun trains. |
