TT has its quirks. Though the scale itself is standardized, everything else is pretty much "up for grabs." I was amused to find a few things this early in the game. One notable thing was the track. German track had tightly-aligned, close-fitting ties. The Shinohara track had wider spacing between ties, making it look more like a narrow gauge system to accompany HO. The other curious thing was the couplers. They were based on a ring and pick system. In a way, they are reminiscent of the hook & loop couplers of Large Scale or the hook-type coupler used on some narrow-gauge railways. Well, they are based on a German prototype. I have heard that in the development of TT, couplers were anything but "standardized."
Track anomaly. The track on the left is Shinohara flex track. Its ties are more widely space than the German track |
The Shinohara track would do better for logging roads, while the tighter German rail would be good for mainlines and more stable roadbed. |
The peculiar Berliner-Bahnen coupler is a ring. It is pushed into the opposing coupler, which is similarly fitted. A pick drops down in both to secure the ring in place. Here it is mounted on a locomotive |
