Here I am, running this little railroad.. In the foreground is a Marx tin gantry crane, to its right is a Marx operating crossing gate, and throughout are the stars of the show: trains. In front of me was the show favorite, the Industrial Rail trolley. I had to decorate all of those little Yule Trees. The tree's garland is actually beaded chain used on light fixtures. by the way.
Getting the pictures taken required quick work, since we had to wait for breaks in the action to get around and get a photo. The O Gauge layout was usually surrounded by kids, parents and grandparents. If I say so myself, my Portable Tinplate World was the big thriller of the show. Kids and adults loved it.
Kids were very attuned to the "blue train", equating this with Thomas the Tank Engine. In fact, this is a goofy 1972 MPC / Lionel version of the Blue Comet locomotive hauling Williams Blue comet streamliners. |
On the far side was the "touch table," which had toys for the kids to play with. You can see a father watching his sons play with the toys, which are just out of sight on the far end. |
The Docksider was quite a hit with everyone. Despite its small size and plain color, it thrilled young and old alike. |
When the Blue locomotive got to hot, we ran an alternate. Here's an NJ Transit GP38 hauling the Blue Comet. Because it is the local railroad, it was a special joy to folks who see the real thing daily. |
The orange cop-and-hobo gondola went over well, with animated policeman chasing a hobo around the car. Equally amusing were the bell ringer signal (foreground) and crossing flasher (rear left). |
This little carousel cost all of $9. The horses moved, and it played Yule music. Children loved it. Everyone enjoyed the Mr. Christmas Lighthouse with rotating light, moving seagulls and coastal sounds. |
