N Scale layout that can be a waterfront pike or point-to-point railway
This layout drew some of its inspiration from the old Hoboken Shore Railroad,
which served the piers on River Street. While my initial vision was
a pike for Docksiders and industrial-type diesels, the plain facts dictate
something larger for N Scale. The EMD GP, SW and Also RS series of
diesels will do well here. Note that pierside is at a lower elevation
than the main yard. The real River Street dipped down below
Elysian Field, and Iwanted to capture something of that. The main yard
in the lower left corner would be your interchange with mainline roads.
You can easily extend the line along the piers to connect with another
pike, as well. This particular layout would work as an extension to
a mainline freight road.
The sidings to the left, below the elevation would serve local industries. Those atop the bluff would be the railways's own yard with loco shop, car shop etc. The horizontal sidings at the bottom left and center would be the connection with a mainline road. You can run this as a point-to-point system or an addition to an existing freight pike. The real Hoboken Shore Railroad's connections abutted the Erie and NYC at the north end of town. Interconnection with the Lackawanna at the south end was via railcar ferry rather than direct connection. Though somewhat inspired by the Hoboken Shore, this cannot be considered a real model of it. |
