N Scale layout for a 3' by 6' layout
This basic layout is a point-to-point system with plenty of switching and sidings. We used Atlas N track and #4 switches. The starting layout uses 11" curves; 9 3/4" curves are used when adding double track inside the wider curves. Though small, a layout like this can host complex operations. It can be a freight, passenger, commuter or mixed railway.
The basic oval of 11" curves and straight track |
The beginning of a point-to-point layout is a matter of dividing the oval and adding track |
Now we add a pair of sidings at top center, a passing siding at bottom and three sidings at top left
|
More switches and 9 3/4" curves are essential to double-tracking this layout. 9 3/4 curves lay inside the 11" curves |
Variation 1: Here we have added a reversing track from right top to bottom center. This track has to be insulated and wired specially. The Atlas "Controller" can handle reverse tracks for two-raul systems, and includes all information on insulation and wiring. |
Variation 2: instead of the previous layout's reversing track ,we add a long spur line that ends in two sidings.. (It would be appropriate for serving a mine, logging camp, etc.) |
Mountains are placed to separate branches of the layout, with other scenery such as a river. |
