Continental army uniforms. The soldier on the extreme left is a senior NCO. He carries the spontoon, a spear-like Medieval weapon which survived into the early 19th century. It was retained as a ceremonial weapon. The other soldiers are from different units, evidenced by the different colored facings on jackets, and the colors of breeches and shirt. This picture from the Library of Congress illustrates such fine details as the cut of coats, linings, facings and buttons.
