Several years after its involvement in the Crimean War, France was drawn into conflicts in Italy. France supported the unification of Italy. However, it also protected Rome from annexation. The French role in Italy eventually ran into conflict with Austria, which controlled parts of Italy. The Franco_Austrian War pitted French veterans of comabt in the Crimea with an Austrian army more suited to the parade ground than the battlefield. Known also as the Seven Weeks war, it was a resounding victory for France and its Piedmontese allies..
