Simple project turns out stunning results!
The old Marx 666 that came my way had seen better days. It was missing its lead and training trucks. Much paint has been scraped away. After a treatment with WD40, TV tuner spray, citrus cleaner and lots of TLC, the small locomotive ran like a top and smoked like W.C. Fields. Despite it's sad appearance, it was a solid runner.
We have a set of Williams Madison cars in CNJ "Blue Comet" colors that we want to use under the Yule Tree this year. I decided to make a "baby" Blue Comet from the old #666. It was easy, actually. I cleaned her up, then spray-painted the boiler blue with "Rustoleum." Once dry, the front of the boiler was painted a dull silver. Antique gold paint was taken to some trim, and the rest was finished with Antique Gold Rub'N'Buff. The wheels were also treated with rub' N' Buff.
It's surprising that a locomotive which looked so dull takes on a new life when painted in a stunning color scheme. Maybe it's not entirely prototype, but it looks great and will certainly make a good showing hauling the Blue Comet under our Yule Tree this year.
