Four track plans for a 30" by 77" area
For such a tight space as 30 inches, only two kinds of common track allow convenient running: O27 and N. O27 is big and robust, well suited for action and fun. The small layouts shown here allow you to run trains and use trackside operating accessories. Smaller car and locomotive types are the order of the day. Even better - trolleys. The small layouts accommodate trolleys and other motorized units very well.
For regular trains, you need to use smaller locomotive types and classic-sized 10" or shorter cars. If running passenger trains, the 12" O27 Streamliners are okay. Among favorites are the MTH Docksider steam locomotive, Lionel 2-4-2 and small 4-4-2 locomotives, K-Line Alco FA locomotives and all Marx locomotives. Marx trains, whether original (pre-1975) or "New" Marx step our boldly on even the smallest O27 pike.
This layout makes interesting use of a crossover that allows a reverse track. This is especially good for trolley and small commuter operations.
