It all started last year, when Velvet came to live in our yard. Velvet is a black feral cat. Her older sister, Soot, lived here previously. (Soot died of illness last year). They are descended of a large cat who looks like a panda, and whom we have come to call "Annie Panda." Since we moved here, Annie has shown up from time to time. An old ,wary feral cat, Annie's progeny tend to set up in or around our yard. Velvet is the youngest of Annie's cats.
Velvet gave us a surprise this year. She had two kittens, whom we had named (tentatively) Phoebe and Chessie. At six weeks old, they prefered to inhabit our garden railroad. Phoebe and Chessie were playful, amusing kittens. Phoebe was shy, while Chessie was quite adventurous and outgoing. (Chessie is the longer-haired cat).
Chessie found a home first. When we took both kittnes to the veterinarian, we found out they were males. Phoebe became Peake. Chessie got a home up in northern NJ with a railfanning couple. Peake ended up inside with us.
Several months later, Peake's mother walked into the house. She did that a couple times. One day, Velvet, a true feral cat, came inside and never left.
