Maintenance of Way Cars

Railroads maintain fleets of cars whose purpose is maintenance of track, structures, signals and other installations.  These are called "Maintenance of Way."  They include equipment for ballasting, track-laying, wreck recovery and general construction.  Maintenance of Way cars are very popular among O / O27 railroaders.  While many are prototypical, one occasionally finds a bizarre variant that has no real-world counterpart.  These are usually operating cars whose appeal is action rather than realism.

Along with the cars listed here, most handcars, gang cars, crew cars, inspection vehicles and other self-propelled small cars belong in the Maintenance of Way category.  Those little vehicles are found on the "Scooters" page.

Cranes are common MOW vehicles.  They are usually accompanied by a gondola or specially-designed caboose, which is the boom tender.

This crane is an updated version of the old Marx crane

This caboose is a boom tender type fitted with a searchlight.  The light is necessary for working at night.

This Lackawanna boom tender is typically assigned to a crane.

This crane has a shorter platform than the Kenncott Copper version.
