Trolley Layout on  Budget

This layout is superb for those who prefer to run trolleys and streetcars in urban settings

This layout is like a wild mouse ride for those who want to model a city with a busy traction system.  You can leave it at 4' by 8' and have a great time, or extend two feet for more action.  Within an urban "landscape," the imaginative modeler can do some tremendous work.  Little cut-offs can serve as short-cuts, pass-by sidings or a place to park an extra trolley. We used O track for most of the layout, adding O27 for one cut-off and the right-side expansion.

We begin with a simple reversing loop layout on a 4' by 8'

Two switches add a simple cut-off

There are two more cut-offs here, each using two switches.  Add both cut-offs at once, or one cut-off at a time.  Note that the cut-off on the left uses four O27 curves

We extend the table two feet and add another reverse loop,   Brown track and switch are O27, not O!  this extra loop could lead to a "trolley park", where earl;y streetcar companies built amusement rides at the end-of-the-line to increase ridership.

Two more O27 switches and one O switchadd a little more action.  For the trolley, traction and streetcar fans, this layout is super!  Imagine the scenery being a city or large town.
