An O Gauge layout that can use either O (O-31) tubular rail or MTH track.
Many will undoubtedly prefer MTH's Realtrack system. Though it clips together in a unique way, it works much like other O Gauge track. Starting with an oval, you can gradually expand by adding switches and track. Since Realtrack costs more than regular tubular rail, it is good to have a gradual plan to expand, should the cost might prohibit building the complete layout at once. The last layout shows how to add a crossover to the layout - this requires no expansion. The addition on a loop to the left would require adding two feet to the layout, however. It is up to you whether to stop at 4' by 8', or eventually expand to 4' by 10'. All track is O-31.
The basic oval has 8 curves and 8 straights |
Here it becomes a semi-dogbone by replacing 4 straights with 4 curves |
A pair of switches and more track add a siding |
Now add another pair of switches and more track for a second loop |
4 switches and a crossover in the center add more action.
If we extend to ten feet, we expand the left with 2 switches and track.
