Build Your Layout Gradually

Here is an O Gauge layout that can grow from 4' by 8' to 4' by 10'

Using O (O-31) Track and Switches

If you start out with full O (O-31) track, why go back to O27?  This layout uses all O track and switches.  You can build to 4. by 8' , or expand further to 4' by 10' .Expansion is in larger chunks on this layout, since the trackwork requires adding more than one switch at a time.

(Please note that switch machines, shown as boxes alongside switches, can be moved to either side.  Our layout program does not let us show this, so machines that look as if they are blocking track here would not do so on your layout.)

Two switches and track gives us a nice passing siding

If you add four more switches, you get an oval that has many operational possibilities

3 more switches and more track make for an outside loop.  The possibilities here are great!

We extend the layout to 4' by 10' and add 4 more switches, giving us more room to run and more sidings.

A 4' by 4' extension on the lower left allows more sidings and a loop.  It takes 4 switches and more track.

You could have a reversing track by adding two more switches and two straight sections to the lower left.

We went one better, adding another 4' by 4' to the lower right. Extra track and 4 switches make a reverse loops and sidings.
