Character figures came fro ma variety of sources: special playsets, cereal prizes, etc. Western figures were popular heroes. They often appeared as character figures.
In the 50s and 60s, a popular series was "Sky King." It was about a cowboy who flew a small plane. "Sky", short for Skyler, also had a ranch, a daughter named Penny and a horse. The series was a popular show for saturdays.
Imagine my surprise, then ,when a Sky King figure appeared among some figures I bought as a lot of MPC cowboys. The figure is black, and a tab by his feet reads "Sky King." Unfortunately, the waxy black plastic does not reproduce well in plastic.
