One does not move in combat as one does in peacetime. Methods of dashing forward and crawling are taught, so as to minimize the soldier's vulnerability to enemy fire. The 1991 Soldier's Handbook clearly illustrates the basic crawl, and the method for darting forward. They have not changed since 1941, but the 1991 pictures are clearer than the older 1941 photographs.
Two routes: the crawling route, and one in a ditch involving a quick rush. The ditch is almost aligned with the enemy's field of fire, and so must be traversed quickly. |
High crawl |
Low crawl - the soldier pushes himself forward with his feet. |
Quick running - soldier uses rifle butt to break his fall. |
