Scuba Toys
Undersea action was inspired by three television shows. A morning
children's show, "Diver Dan" featured a cast of string-operated fish and
a man in a deep sea diving mask. Next was an evening show, Sea Hunt,
with Lloyd Bridges. Later came "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," a
futuristic series with a submarine and a small "flying sub." It was
set far in the future, something like the late 70s / early 80s. These
underwater shows inspired our interest. Of course, the toymakers met
our interest with the latest round of toys.
This deep sea diver is actually an aquarium ornament. Some of these
are inspired by older lead figures from the 1930s. |

These are modern copies of the famous cereal-box offer from the late 50s
and early 60s. They were billed as diving frogmen. You put baking
powder into the compartment under the frogman's foot, drop him in water and
wait. He bobs up and down. |

The yellow man has a limpet mine, and the red one has a knife. |

This recast complements the frogmen, the diving mini sub. It was also
powered by baking soda. |
