Realistic Railroad Engineer's

Train Game

Can you solve these genuine railroad problems?

Use your trains to enjoy these great games!

This game is like the real problems railroaders face when trying to place cars.  On the railroad, cars are gathered and made into a train.  Along the route, the train makes several stops.  At each stop it leaves off some cars and picks up others.  The cars have to be placed on the train in the right order, so that they are each left at the proper place.  Our Train Game involves moving trains to get all of the cars in the right spot.

You have a locomotive (the gray car with yellow and maroon stripe), four freight cars numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, and a caboose numbered 5.  Your track should look like this one.  It will have an oval, and two switches.  One switch lets the train leave the oval.  The other leads to two sidings: A and B.  Without taking the train or cars off the track, you must move the cars to the right locations.

Each game has a number to match.  This is the number of moves.  See if you can match it when you solve the problem.

Here are the rules:

1) Each picture shows where the cars should be when you start.

2) Cars and train must stay on the track

3)  Each time you move a car, even if you only move the locomotive in the opposite direction, that is counted as one move.

4) You must try to solve the puzzle in as few moves as possible.  The number of moves given with each problem is the number to match.

5) The siding closest to the oval is A.  The outside siding is B.

Pick up Car #1 between Locomotive and caboose, then place Car 1 on track B.  Match: 13 moves.

Move Car #4 to Track B,  Pick up Car #3 between 1 and 2.  Match: 9 moves

Place Car #1 on Track B, place cars #2, #3 and #4 on Track A.  Match: 9 moves

Place Car #2 on Track B.  Make up your train with the cars in this order: Locomotive, Cars #4, #3, #1, #5.  Match: 8 moves.

Place Car #2 on Track B and Car #1 on Track A.   Match: 7 moves

Pick up Car #1 between Cars #3 and #5.  Pick up Car #4 between Cars #2 and #3.  Drop Cars #2 and #3 on Track B.  Match: 17 moves.

If you do not have a train, we made one for you.  It is just like the cars in the pictures, and it also has track, sidings and railroad buildings for you.  Get it by clicking here!  If you want different trains, you can make the trains that are offered in our Holiday Diorama downloads.  Click here to find them.  Once you make one the trains, you can draw the track oval and sidings on a large sheet of paper.  This way, you can play our Real Railroad Engineer's Train Game.
