Below are lists that compare the dimensions of 3/16" scale and 1/48. They illustrate the space-saving benefits of 1/64 scale.
In 3/16" scale:
3/16" equals one scale foot
1/16" equals four scale inches
1/32" equals two scale inches
1/64" equals one scale inch
A six-foot man is 1 1/8" tall
A 40' boxcar is 7 1/2" long
An F3 (52') is 9 3/4 inches long
An E7 (70') is 13 1/8 inches long
An 80' Heavyweight car is 15 inches long
1n 1/4" scale:
1/4 " equals one foot
1/8" equals six inches
1/16" equals three inches
1/32 equals I 1/2 inches
A six foot man is 1 1/2" tall (3/8" difference)
A 40' boxcar is 10" long (2 1/2" difference)
An F3 (52') is 13 inches long (3 3/4" difference)
An E7 (70') is 17 1/2 inches long ( 4 .375" difference)
An 80" heavyweight is 20- inches long (5" difference)
A freight trains with five cars and an F3 locomotive is:
3/16 scale is 47 1/4 to 50 inches long
1/4" scale is 63 to 66 inches long
A difference of 15 3/4" to 16" inches
A three cars passenger train pulled by an E7:
3/16" scale is 58 1/2 to 61 inches long
1 1/4" scale is 77 1/2 to 79 inches long
A difference of 18 to 19 inches
A house of 25 by 40 feet would be:
4 2/3" by 7.5" in 3/16 scale
6.25" by 10" in 1/4" scale
A difference of 1.58" by 2.5"
Track Gauge: Scale to Real
The gauge of O / O27 track for 3/16" scale is 6' 8"
The gauge for 1/48 scale is 5'
The 1/48' gauge is 1/16" wider than a scale equivalent of real-world standard 4' 8.5"
The 3/16" gauge is 3/8" wider than the scale equiavalent of real-world 4' 8.5" gauge.
