Known Sources Of 1/64 - 3/16" Scale Locomotives and Rolling Stock for O gauge

Sources of 3/16" scale cars for O Gauge

Marx Scale Tinplate

Though the 999 locomotive was made for scale sets, it is not really scale.

Marx Scale Plastic, regular and deluxe.

This includes all eight-wheel freights. The 4 wheel types are toys, not scale.

Pieces other than Marx

Industrial Rail produces O27 cars that fit the 3/16" profile. The freights are a variety of types and road names. While we cannot vouch for new car types added since Atlas took over the line, we are fairly confident that these original car types fit the 3/16" profile.

K-Line O27 cars in the blue boxes are recasts of the Marx freight cars.

K-Line's 13.5 inch streamliner is a perfect fit for 1/64.

Lionel Alco FA: this car is close enough to 1/64 length to work well.

Williams Golden Memories FA is a copy of Lionel. Do not confuse with the Williams Traditional series, which is 1/48 scale

Williams' 60' Madison heavyweights are copes of the Lionel cars. They work for 1/64 version of the 80' passenger heavyweights. The Madison cars will NOT handle a 27" curve

Williams' O27 streamliners are short versions of the later type passenger cars. They would represent a 64' car. Great for shorter model railways.

K-Line FA: this retooled AMT / KMT / Kusan locomotive is close to the right size for 1/64. It has better detail than the Lionel equivalent

RMT has reissued its version of the Marx RDC, Marx S2 and several Marx freight cars.

A note on O gauge Steam locomotives. Very few steamers made prior to 2005 were a true 1/48 scale. Because of the size of real steam locomotives, many were scaled down. 1/64 sized models are common. For this reason, it is easier for steam era railways when it comes to 3/16" scale on O gauge. Of course, the Marx 333, Marx 1829 Hudson, K-Line O27 Pacific and K-Line O27 Hudson are scaled for 3/16". Note how many other locomotives by Lionel and others approximate their size.

I hate to admit it, but the Lionel Postwar Pennsylvania S2 Turbine (#s 671, 681, 682 and 2020) is scaled shorter than 1/64. It is one of my favorite steamers. The MTH baby F3 from the late 1990s is also a bit large, being over ten inches long. Actual size should be 9 3/4" for 1/64.
